Yeah, I think Mass is safe. There is a point though, a lot of the older reactors (which is ALL of them in the US) don't have the safety features that newer designs do. You look at some of the recent designs, like the pebble bed reactors, and they are designed to degrade very gracefully, as near to meltdown-proof as we know how to make them. It's unfortunate, the no-nukes nuts here have managed to prevent new reactors from being built, which has left us reliant on coal and aging reactors built with 60's era technology.

Same thing with refineries. There hasn't been a new refinery in the US since something like 1978, IIRC, which means the operating ones are getting older and older. Makes no sense at all, does it? We could get newer, state of the art stuff but the eco-k00ks keep shooting us in the foot.
