| Hey, I know I'm new and all but I thought I'd share this resource with you. It let's you check when the site was registered and other information that can help you determine if the company is legitimate or not. Discovered it when trying to check the legitimacy of some alibaba vendors (most are scammers, so be careful). http://whois.domaintools.com/
I'm by no means affiliated with them, but hope it can help save someone some trouble. You want to look for sites that have been open awhile, preferably longer than a year. Also check when the registration expires. If the site was registered in 6/2011 and expires 6/2012 there's a good chance it isn't legitimate. Scammers don't want to pay for multiple years when they know they'll be shut down sooner than that.
For example smok tech doesn't expire until 2014, I'd feel pretty safe ordering from them. |

| No problem. When I get home from work I'll try and post vendors I was in contact with that I THINK are scam artists. I'm trying to set up a group buy for myself and friends and wasted a lot of time talking to these people before finding that site. Thankfully I hadn't pulled the trigger on anything yet.
Other things to keep in mind. If the vendor is using a free email addy (gmail, hotmail, etc) be leary. If their paypal account uses a free one AVOID them. Though paypal in general is a bad idea for international trade. As are money orders and t/t transfers. Unfortunately most legitimate vendors also only accept t/t and money orders...so hard to judge from that. Escrow is the safest method of payment, though by no means a guarantee. There's also normally a fee ($25-$40) but worth it to ensure you get your delivery.
Be careful of area codes +46 or +48...can't remember off the top of my head which one. It's a UK area code, but its one anyone can buy. So a company in China could have that number, even though they're not in the UK. No good reason for any legitimate company to do that.
If you do get scammed you're pretty much out of luck. You cant file a police report unless you're in China, or have a friend over there willing to do it for you.
Best piece of advise I can give you, if the deal seems to good to be true...it probably is.

| If you're scammed, you would file a theft report with your local Police department and they would then contact the authorities in the country of which you were taken.
The process is lengthy, however....and could take a long time (depending upon the monetary amount involved) before you'll get a resolution.
But if it's anything under $500, you may as well chalk it up as a total loss because it may just get stuffed into the Police departments "non-priority" folder and sit there forever. Quote:
