According to an Associated Press blurb as seen on KTBS - Senator Frank R. Lautenberg of New Jersey has contacted the FDA and asked that E-cigarettes be banned in the United States until more studies have been conducted. They also state that the FDA spokesperson would respond directly to the Senator about his concerns.
Another blurb from the AFP: But Democratic Senator Frank Lautenberg wrote the FDA Monday warning that there have been no clinical studies verifying such claims or assessing their long-term health effects.
"For these reasons, I believe the FDA must take immediate action to take these products off the market" until they can be tested, the New Jersey senator said in his letter. To talk about this turn of events, make sure to head on over to our forums here: Discuss - US Senator Asking for Ban on E-Cigarettes.

Not all is lost!
From TheHill.com: Quote: |
Reps. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.), Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) and Collin Peterson (D-Minn.) have all been spotted using the device on Capitol Hill.
| Folks, it looks like we have Representatives that use e-cigs, so this battle won't go down without a fight. Quote: |
Stearns shot back at Lautenberg on Monday, saying that there is no evidence that the device is harmful.
| Uh-oh, not the C word! Stearns is quoted as saying: Quote: |
“These e-cigarettes are smokeless and do not produce carcinogens. The nicotine in e-cigarettes is controlled in a capsule that can help in smoking cessation by allowing the user to reduce gradually the nicotine level, hopefully to zero.”
| More *hopefully* good news: Quote: |
Stearns has sent electronic cigarettes to House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) and President Obama to help them quit smoking. He’s been seen using the device in the Speaker’s Lobby, where Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) banned smoking two years ago. Her office did not respond to a request for comment by press time.
| I wonder how many ecigs President Obama has been given. Maybe that is why there is a shortage .

If Obama (and other Congressmen) is (are) vaping, maybe we do have a fighting chance....

That burns my butt.. When we have a big percentage of the us out of work .. They should be working on that.. Not this.. The land of the free.. lol... They just want to find a way to tax them.. Thats all... If they put a tax on them you wouldn't hear another word about them...

I know that I will be watching this very close. It will have an effect on how I vote in the next election. I also plan on writing directly to my senator and representative to let them know how I feel about this subject. I hope to get a response back from them on how they feel. I also know that I will financially support any opponent to Frank Lautenburg and may send some support in Sterns direction, even though I'm not partial to the Republican party.
But I feel that committed to this subject. For someone to want to ban e-cigs just because they resemble smoking is beyond stupid. And this is the cry that I've heard from the anti-smokers ever since these have become popular. And when Mr. Lautenburg looses his next election, I will hold a cookout, and everyone is invited (byom).

I have found no problems or dangers in vaping from the research I have found, or from personal usage. I think this is a matter of Big Tobacco and Big Pharmaceutical feeling their pocket books threatened by the success and popularity of these "Smoking Replacements". I would be crushed if the US tried to band e-cigarettes from being sold in the US. It is so much easier to by locally. If the FDA bands e-cigarette's it is a business move on somebodies part. Band the sales from the little people, "discover them to be safe", after all. Then big business gets prepared in the mean time to take over the market. This would be a slap in the face for all the new small business in the US created from e-cigarette's. Of course the government will want it share too and find a way to tax this "New Drug". Not to sound rude towards are government as a whole. Their are many professional's and government officials in support of e-cigarettes. For a healthier alternative to smoking carcinogens I see no reason at all to band these products. However you probably should be 18 to purchase e-cigarettes since nicotine is a ingredient. Danger! E-cigarette shipments in the hot seat... check out the audio link on this site... Home Page
It is a message from DHL express out of L.A. stating that e-cighawii's shipment of e-cigarette's was sent back to the company due to the FDA's decision concerning electronic cigarette's. That it would be at least 2 years to give the sender the information to clear electronic cigarette's, lung accessories, anything to do with electronic cigarette's through customs! Someone tell me that this is not the case. Please post

Wow. I didn't know the pharmecutical companies had invested that much money into Lautenburg's campaign.
That says a lot right there.
I would truly be heartbroken if there is a ban on e-cigs.
My Aunt is friends with Margaret Hamburg. My aunt is a smoker, and her friend is an ex-smoker. I am going to talk to her about e-cigs and see if she can give me some information on what might be going on with Margaret's thoughts and position on the subject. It wont be easy though. My aunt doesn't like me much!

I wish I can comment on this but whenever I talk and politicians are involved in the conversation the words I use will get me banned from this forum. I can already feel my finger being drawn towards the cap lock key and the "F" key so I had better stop now.

Taxing is involved because of the many smokers. E-cigarettes become in demand today that is why there can be no wonder it can adds up to funds better. Smokers should just have to know when to control themselves so they shouldn't be blaming for what they pay.

I don't know if you all heard, but SB400 has not been signed by the governor. “To the Members of the California State Senate:
I am returning Senate Bill 400 without my signature.
While I support restricting access of electronic cigarettes to children under the age of 18, I cannot sign a measure that also declares them a federally regulated drug when the matter iscurrently being decided through pending litigation.
Items defined as “tobacco products” are legal for anyone over the age of 18. If adults want to purchase and consume these products with an understanding of the associated health risks, they
should be able to do so unless and until federal law changes the legal status of these tobacco products.
For this reason, I am unable to sign this bill.
Sincerely,
Arnold Schwarzenegger” |
