I think we posted at the exact same time rocket because yours wasn't there when I clicked on the little button. From what you just said almost answers my question in a way. The battery is kinda like a safety feature for the computer. Thats something a person would definitley use someone elses computer for.

OK ya'll stop that.

Mine is mostly guessing because I don't have a passthru like that one.

I have had batteries that wouldn't work on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Some are just fickle.

My best guesses are:
weak battery,
USB port self limiting,
bad wire,

You need to push about 2 amps to get the thing to vape correctly. If you have a powered hub with an external power supply (Wall Wart) they are rated up to about an amp.

The battery is like a reservior. The USB charges the battery, and the battery powers the atomizers. The battery can push 2 amps to the atomizer without drawing current from the USB port. That's why if you keep hitting it it gets weaker vapor, because you're drawing the battery down.

I made a pass thru that plugs right into my computer's power supply via one of the hard drive power connectors, but I didn't current limit it and burned an atty. It vaped like a champ just before it blew out!

Thank you Hachiroku, whenever I think of volts I forget all about amps. Thats why I never got into electronics. I got a B+ in physics but I remember during the electrical part I just nodded my head at the instructor like I knew what he was talking about while most of it went over. So I won't be butchering my pass-thru now. Thanks!

I'm putting info about the TW USA site's 30% off sale here because that means their 510 mega batteries that last, for me, 9 to 12 hours between charges (my vaping rate is about a 5 on a 1 to 10 scale) AND the 5-battery-charger that's also unique to them are much more affordable. New 510 users may want to check out those 2 items that are only available at TW and TW-owned sites. Here's the text from the ad:

As a huge thank you to all of our customers who have supported us throughout the past 12 months we are slashing our prices across the site by a massive 30%. Get yourself down to the online shop during the celebrations to bag yourself a bargain or some early Christmas gifts for the e-cig users in your life. The sale is due to start at 12 noon on Friday 4th of December and will run all the way through until Monday 7th December. That's 3 whole days of crazy savings and manic shopping that Totally Wicked is rewarding its most valued customers with.

I'm not in any way affiliated with TW; I just appreciate any supplier that pays attention to their customers' needs and develops products to meet those needs. The mega-battery and 5-battery charger were both items obviously developed to respond to 510 users' complaints about short battery life and the annoyance of having to constantly switch batteries to keep enough charged. I've ordered from TW USA and found they are responsive to questions and ship quickly.

I use a 510 on a Protege from Puresmoker.com it has great flavor, huge vapor and I don't have to worry about changing batteries anymore or buying more. I love my 510 Protege. I have tried BLUE, SMOKESTIK, NJOY 510's and the popular 801 & 901 e-cigs. The 510 ... to me ... is the best of all. It has the best tobacco flavor which I prefer after smoking for over 40 years. I have also used the DSE 601 Pipe. It has huge vapor and the flavor is also good but the 510 Protege is Much better for someone on the go, and I have never been much on pipes.... so now I have a full new kit and an xtra pipe with it just sitting here, but they don't eat anything.
I would recommend the 510 to anyone who was a serious smoker. I put down my regular cigarettes almost a year ago and have used nothing but a 510 after spending the money to try everything recommended on the market. Also, the 510 atty's are easily cleaned with Hot water and then dry them with a hair dryer. I'm still using a 510 atty that is almost 6 months old! I did have to clean the brass contacts for a better connection.
For someone who was a casual or even normal smoker.... The 510 Njoy, Dura, Titan, Tecc are all excellent with the manual switch's. But if you were a constant heavy puffer like me... I'd go with a 510 Protege or Prodigy. The other products mentioned above are all good products but I prefer a 510.
Get a 510... You will like it!

tracy522.........I agree 100% with everything you said except the part about the Protege or Prodigy and thats only because I've never owned them. The only reason I have a 601 is because I won one and I have to say I like it but while typing this I had to stop a couple times to wait for a cloud of vaper to disperse so I can see my monitor again from the 510 I'm using right now. Just a std 510 with 3.7v and ECOpure English Toffee juice. If I ever get into the position so I can buy something new I might try one of those green things that that snarky guy is always praising. Until then I've got to say the 510 std unit is the best there is for the price. (maybe I should say the best I've ever used)

Hi Nebraskapuffer,
Glad you agree and enjoy your 510. On the Protege... They have a huge amount of battery power, they are manual, they are made from good solid stainless steel and the vaping power they give to a 510 is excellent. I can use my 510 almost all day on 1 battery and I carry a small bottle of 24mg or 36mg juice to drip on the atomizer or freshen/fill the cartridge. So, I have BIG vapor & taste all day! You'r right about the 601's, they are an excellent product with big vapor & taste but I don't really care to carry a pipe around with me, even though the battery & cartridge will last all day and longer for many people. I think it's funny about you trying to see your monitor through the 510 smoke/vapor. I can identify with that. Oh, I also want to mention that I have No ties to Puresmoker.com except as a customer, and that's just My Opinion on the Protege 510. I do believe you could run over mine with a truck & not hurt it. For someone that doesn't just Puff Puff as hard as it sounds like you do... and I Know I do, the standard 510 with the Xtended battery power would likely be OK. But, for us heavy X cigarette smokers that had one at hand all day I would go with a product like the Protege 510 or if they want that sophisticated Sherlock Holmes look then the dse 601 would fill the bill. They vape good & drip excellent also and battery power will last longer than my Protege. 510's Forever!

Tracy, that's good information; thanks for posting. The 510 got me off tobacco in June of this year and I'm still enjoying it immensely, especially since I got the mega-power batts. And I'm still using my original 2 attys that came with my starter kit in June; I've got about 10 new ones waiting in the wings but the first two just keep on trucking.

(Usually, here on Vapeatron, we try not to say too much about what long life we get out of our attys because we have a member who is severely atty-challenged; he burns up 3 or 4 weekly and when he reads about attys that last over a month.... well, you know how sad it is to see a grown man cry.... Check some of the atty-related threads and you can read about his "problem"...)

Gee, what the hell am I doing wrong?

Here's a question for you and the other long-lived atty owners: Where did you get them, and how do you use them?

I still haven't 'weaned' off ciggies, so I am CONSTANTLY hitting the thing. I wait until it tastes harsh, add 2-3 more drops, and vape again.

The thing I made to use in the car has a fender washer holding the atty in place, and it is pressed in REALLY TIGHT! I mean, REALLY TIGHT!!! As such, it acts as a heat sink and keeps the atty cooler than usual. Also, it's set to 4.2 volts constant and limited to 2.25 amps. But, the rest of you just have either straight 510's or extended battery life accessories, so what are you doing that I'm not, or vice-versa?

Aside from your various power enhancements short only of hooking directly into a 220 line, Hachi, I can't see that I'm doing anything differently than you. I hold the manual button down longer than 4 seconds most of the time, around 10 seconds for a really deep draw, and that doesn't cause problems; I dropped it in my chair and sat on it until the back of my leg started burning and that didn't hurt it; I use sweet and fruit flavored PG and VG liquid (amaretto, caramel, orange, blueberry, pineapple), some pre-made and some DIY using Lorann's Candy Oils and Capella Drops and I never clean it because it doesn't get clogged or nasty-tasting; I almost always overfill my carts so some liquid runs down on the atty and I have dripped just to see what it's like and the direct fluid doesn't hurt it. I probably don't vape as constantly as you do but I smoked 2 packs of analogs a day so I vape fairly regularly all the time.... I think the only real difference is your power experimentation and you'll just have to accept the fact that genious comes with a price, in your case about $7.99 a week. I mean, you can't worry about a little collateral damage when you're on the path to inventing the ultimate e-cig. Imagine how many kites Franklin incinerated before that first bulb lit up! You go, guy. We're all behind you here (in my case, way behind you, far enough away to avoid the inevitable shrapnel).

For me... its all about the maintenance.

(Weekly dry burn-offs, cola baths, pure alcohol ultrasound spa treatments & 90lb PSI compressor blow outs.)

...and I vape like the proverbial caped ape!

Just an FYI....

The LED light stuck lit on a broken 510 battery I have has glowed uninterrupted for 4 months now... the grand kids are fond of calling it "The Blue Nightlight".

Tried all of these too...

When an atty starts failing, producing low vapor (after three days) I try blowing it through with sheer lung power...clear the juice out and start over. This works pretty well, it comes back like new for a day or so. When they REALLY get bad I hook them up to the USB without a cart, hit the button for 4 seconds and BLOW! When the steam starts to subside I wipe the juice off and restart. I think this is what's killing them, but I don't so this until the vapor is really, really low. After that they're Atty Smasher fodder.
The last one I put on the Atty Smasher because I was fed up with it has been vaping like a champ since!

Since Kaye twisted my arm and made me buy some of TW's mega batteries (she actually twisted it off then beat me with the bloody end and then just handed it back to me with this special kind of smile on her face that can't hardly be explained, she can be really mean when she's trying to get her point accross). Anyway, these things are every bit as good as she says they are. They seem to hit a little harder too which is a good thing and I'm still vaping on the 1st one for two hours and it's still hitting hard (not nearly as hard as Kaye can hit though).

Now I've got a question for anyone that might know. Since I'm sure I'll be using these mega marvels most what can I do with my old std batteries? Will they loose their juice if I just stop using them? Should I run them all the way down to store them? Should I charge them before storing them? Put them in the fridge? Someday I'll need them again I'm sure but what is the best way to put them away for an extended period of time? I've got a feeling others will have the same question once Kaye get her mega battery message out.

The mods are cool and look like fun but with this new battery this 510 does everything I need an e-cig to do. By the way I doubt I would have bought these batteries if it weren't for the things Kaye said about them. She also does an excellent job in here helping out the nubees and if she don't know something she can point them in the right direction and she does it because she truly cares about people wanting to stop burning analogs. Maybe I was stretching things a little about the arm twisting..........yeah I was. Thanks for being here Kaye.
