I take it the 'burnt metal gag me taste' is a little different than the 'melting plastic mop bucket makes me want to puke taste' you get when you over heat a dry cartridge?

I just got a new atomizer the other day too (also new at this stuff). What i did was draw on the new atomizer throughout the day without inhaling. After a day of that (while vaping on the other atomizer) the taste was gone and ready to start vaping. Oh, and i put 3 drops on the atomizer, and never let it dry out.

I think I have found a solvent that is safe to put in your atomizer and dissolve some of the factory primer away and also clean out some crude every once in a while. It won't do a deep cleaning, and won't fix an "overdone" atomizer.

This stuff is pretty cheap and you probably have some around the house anyway. Just pour a little in the atty, let it soak for a minute or two and blow it out. No need to rinse the atty after soaking as this stuff is really compatible with e-juice anyway.

The chemical name is Propylene Glycol, dissolves a lot of stuff, flushes away easy.

Seek not to know the answer, but to understand the question.

Here is what seems to work for me:

Roll up the corner of a paper towel and gently jam it into the atty.

Blow through the battery end until my ears pop.

Change to fresh part of paper towel and repeat. Flood with unflavored juice (or just use PG) and let soak overnight.

Repeat paper towel/blow thing a couple more times.

Give it a good 15-20 burn.

A couple drops on the mesh bridge, load cart, vape.

I STILL get a funky taste for the first cart or two but it's not too bad and I can live with it.

I soak in alcohol (>90%) for at least 10 minutes while giving it the occasional shake, blow it out, let it dry for a few minutes, add some liquid (a little too much) and then roll up a tiny piece of paper towel (like the tea-bag-cartridge thing) and stick that in the atomizer and vape until it just starts tasting dry, swapping out for dry paper when necessary. Pop on a wet cart and I'm ready to roll. If it still tastes "off" I repeat the process, but usually once is enough.

All in all it usually takes about 20-30 minutes, but I hate both the primer taste on new atomizers and the "tobacco" flavor on the ones packed with kits, so it's definitely worth it for me. As an aside, I do the same thing when I'm testing out new flavors so that there's no chance of mixing the tastes.
