So, I got a Prepaid Visa card and out some money on it, then went to the gas station.

Ya know, there is a REASON they tell you NOT to use it at the pump! I put the card in, and pumped out 20 bucks worth. I have the card set up so it notifies me if it gets used (WHY doesn't my BANK do this?!?!?!) and I get an SMS about 2 minutes later...

ALERT: your card was used at 2:30 for a purchase of EIGHTY TWO DOLLARS AND THREE CENTS!!!!

They took ALL the money I had on the card as a "deposit". I hopefully will have it back tom...er, later TODAY because it was all the money I had for the weekend!

Happened to me and the wife a while ago and we knew it was from a gas station. One day I put gas and a few days after there were a couple of charges of over $2300. I called my credit union and after reviewing the charges we found out was used in Italy at a tennis club.

Fast forward a couple of weeks, my wife goes to the same gas station and gets gas. A few days after her card gets dinged about $1800. Called credit union and they squared it away. This time the crooks shopped at different WalMarts mostly gift cards.

What pisses me off is that, sometimes before this incident I would get calls from the Credit Card fraud people at the credit union when I buy something worth a couple hundred verifying the purchase. I told them you call me when the charge is $200 but you never called me when the charges were over 2 grand and in Italy!

I feel for you Steam!

Steam, your credit cards will let you do that. Just setup in the alerts a dollar limit and it will notify you in your choice of ways when a charges posts to your account.

I've had my CC company call me on the phone before I ever finished at the checkout line to make sure it was me that made that big purchase! (it's an automatic phone call for anything over $1,000)

I hate it when the gas stations do a pre-auth like that. There's really no reason for it to stay there for any longer than the completion of the sale. There's one station here that DH was using that left it on there for 72 hours for the full purchase price. And the charge was settled in 24 hours so I was being charged twice for the first 72 hours. We stopped getting fuel there! Normally they only do a $1 pre-auth just to make sure that the account exists so they can allow you to gas up.
Now, in Oregon, they didn't do that at all. You aren't allowed to pump your own fuel there. Sometimes the charge didn't show on the account for 3-4 days!
