Keep in mind that nicotine in its raw form is toxic. The problem lies in its fast absorption rate. It'll absorb through your skin too, but when in contact with such things as your tongue or gums it's almost instantaneous (as far as I've understood the hard way). You'll get that nasty flavor, a burning sensation, and sometimes become sweaty (almost exclusively on your forehead).
From the scientific research that I have read, the equivalent potency of the carcinogens in a single analog cigarette is approximately eight hundred puffs on an electronic cigarette. If the science is correct, and one will go through a single drop of eliquid in roughly two to five puffs (depending on the user), then one drop that would touch your skin/tongue/gums would still not be enough to be of serious carcinogenic concern.
However, as nicotine is a stimulant, you may want to be leery of allowing the solution to reach you in more than a puff, as you could be looking at possible cardiovascular complications. Nothing that would be of serious risk to the average person I'm sure, but people with hypertension, arrhythmia, or cardiomyopathy (or really any cardiovascular impairments) may take some risk. I have a friend that has been using his in substitute of tobacco, and he's alright; but, when the juice touches his lip or tongue, he will end up having minor to moderate heart palpitations.
So you may have problems with direct contact, but you'd probably have to absorb more than a drop on an average use if you are a normal, healthy person to see such problems. Otherwise, if you have cardiovascular or maybe even nervous issues that are concerned with your heart, you may want to be more cautious with the juice.
Oh and keep it away from pets. Especially aquatic, amphibious, and reptilian creatures. They'll likely be most easily harmed by nicotine.
