| Need to buy a new soldering iron, I figured, may as well spend the extra dough on something better than average.
Also, best type of solder to use on boards and connectors? Silver, flux core, lead free?
Suggestions?

Suggestions? | Go for the throat and get a Weller. A real Weller, and not one of the Chinese POS' at Home Depot. ~$140, but it will last a long time.

| sorry to hi-jack the OP but what would be a good alternative to buying a $100 soldering station that would work? no bells and whistles...just an adjustable wattage station..
anybody use a cheaper one that works?

This one's only $86: http://www.amazon.com/Weller-WES51-A...6765227&sr=1-1
Get a BLUE one. The orange ones are mostly junk. It will prolly last you the rest of your life.

anybody use a cheaper one that works? | Look up...$86. I have bought "Wellers" from HD that are garbage, I bought a $24 soldering station at Rad Shack that is garbage. If you do any amount of soldering at all, spend the bux and get something worthwhile.
I used the Rad Shack one to make THREE mods and it's decrepit already.

I have tried about 4-5 other irons and none are as good as a Weller station. They just last.

| Well I imagine they are all made in China.
Hakko seems to make very good stuff. Their original 936 is probably the most copied/cloned soldering station out there.
The reviews are always positive.
This is the update to the 936. http://www.amazon.com/Hakko-Solderin.../dp/B004M3U0VU
