Not that this would ever happen unless we completely start over, which maybe not a bad idea..

"the right thang" with em. They don't need to send em to no Cuba.

Everglades or Louisiana swamps both could make a great, and more localized, New Guantanamo.

Wait! STOP! Send terrorists to the south? Great idea except for one thing..... Whatcha gonna do with DH and me? Our wonderful government has lumped us into the domestic category even though we are quite the opposite, along with more than a million people like us.

The U.S. base at Gitmo had one of the last big screen outdoor drive-in theaters.
Wonder if it's still there?

Not in my neighborhood... I don't live near a prison... but I would like to see how well they do in a max security prison with "Bubba" for a cellmate.

Does Obama even have the authority to do it?

What real authority does a President have anyway other than symbolically putting his stamp of approval on whatever congress decides?

If Gitmo were closed, they wouldn't BE in a prison....they'd be YOUR NEIGHBOR!

That was the original plan when "closing Gitmo" was introduced; to release them into the population....HERE!!!

Cuz technically speaking, they're innocent until proven guilty by a jury of their peers. So since there haven't been any trials, they'd be freed!

Yeah, think the public outcry won that battle.

Gitmo stays open....

That's why they're all in Gitmo, Wiz....Cuz they can't hold them in the US due to our laws.

None of them have been formally charged yet. (Lack of Proof)

They're just holding them forever.....without proof, without trials, etc.

Closing Gitmo they'd HAVE TO release them according to our own laws.

Hence the whole outcry, debate, etc.

I don't know but recently found out he personally screwed me out of a particular job that now is on hold indefinitely... probably till the next election. So I have to wait for others to open up now. Just finding more ways everyday of how he is screwing me and I didn't know it.

The laws (pre OBAMA) would require the "suspects" to be charged as civilians, or combatants (terrorists) affiliated with a foreign government if held in the U.S. I think Obama's original plan was to transfer detainees to civilian prisons. Some states volunteered the services of their prison system, but most objected. But there is a problem with that. The current laws would not alloy the same "investigative" measures that can be performed outside our boundaries. Legal or not, Gitmo is out of sight/out of mind.

Many consider us to be "at war" with terrorists. Our government has wanted to have the ability to extract information, by whatever means from these "detainees" since at least 9/11. Holding them out of the country was a ploy to circumvent laws of detainment and allow "special" interrogation methods.

Whether are not you agree with sending terror suspects to Gitmo, whether or not you agree with false identification of the detainees, secret movements between Gitmo and other foreign prisons, and special interrogation methods, prisoner counting math that just "doesn't add up", or putting terror suspects into the U.S. court system, trying them based on only "unclassified" evidence, and then releasing them into the U.S. population (or deporting the foreign nationals to their home country to rejoin their comrades) is a balance between humanity, national security, and money.

Don't forget that "detainment" of a U.S. citizen, without formal charges, without the "right" to due process, afforded us by the Constitution, applies also to naturalized foreign nationals in this country, sometimes as "sleepers", with the sole purpose of terrorizing the American people.

Present a better way of getting your hands on a terrorist, not violate his rights, humanely extract information about co-conspirators and planned attacks within our boundaries, not "wiki-leak" the info so they can change plans or go hide, and I bet someone would use it.

Close Gitmo? Not until there is a viable alternative.

Concerned about being detained as a terrorist? I'd be more concerned about state and local authorities sticking you with a felony, putting you in prison for the rest of your life, or worse in Texas, based on some "civilian" eye witness or evidence made up by the authorities just to "solve" a case.
The loss of your freedom is probably much more likely from some county sheriff's office than from the administration in D.C.

An innocent person getting locked away due to an over-eager city attorney, or shot by a swat team knocking down the wrong door, while rapists and murderers are released into his neighborhood couldn't happen. That would be against the Constitution. Welcome to DreamLand.
