I have yet to have an atomizer die (knock on wood), but then again, I have only been e-smoking for a month. I don't plan on doing any preventative maintenance either. I figured its not worth the effort, but in the same token, I do make sure I have a backup plan. I don't want to be forced to go the analog route ever again!
One of the things that turned me on to ecigs was the cost savings over analogs. Although right now, I am upside down cost wise, eventually it will be a heck of a lot cheaper to use ecigs than normal cigs.
For example, a pack a day smoker (from what has been posted before) will go through about 2mg of ejuice day (I personally probably use less). Multiply that by 30 and you get 60mg of juice needed for a month. A 50ml bottle of juice from Puresmoker.com would run me $30. That comes out to $0.60/mg, or $1.20/day. Not knowing how long my atomize & battery will last, lets just say you get a new one every month. Add $15 for the battery and $10 for the atomizer and you now have a total for the month of $61. Around here, a carton of analogs will run you $45 with tax, so that is $4.50/pack. Multiply that by 30 and you get $135.
I was not able to calculate the shipping cost for the ecig stuff from Puresmoker.com because it appears they are out of stock (again!!!). So even if we add in say $15 for shipping to our $61, that still is a savings of $59 a month!. I don't know about you, but I would love to have an extra $60 in my pocket

At the very least, I could use that money to buy me a new Wii game
I should also note, that I am in no way saying DON'T do preventative maintenance on your atomizers. It is totally up to the user to determine what is best for them. My opinion on PM might change the more experience I have with ecigs. I simily wanted to point out the cost savings are still pretty significant even if you have to replace hardware once a month.
EDIT: I should also note that I pimarily drip smoke and top off my carts. I think the wrost thing for an ecig is to let it get dry. Putting too much juice in the atomizer, however, is not good for it either. If you get a gurgling sound when you take a drag... probalby means too much liquid; plus you can get liquid in your mouth if you overfill the cart... yuck!
