Hello everyone,
I have been reading a ton on the forum and if someone has answered this please forgive. I see a lot of information on how long to charge batteries and clean atomizers. Something I have yet to see is information on long term storage. Assuming that the FDA or other three letter agency squashes these units, I would like to have a stockpile. Does anyone know approx. how long a e-cig battery can be stored? Do you have to occasionally top it off to matain it? I know the atomizer device is primarily a nichrome wire wrapped around some non conductive material. What about the wick/mesh at the top? Is the metal mesh reactive?

Hey DrDave! Welcome aboard! And let me be the first to say ... uh ... uhm ... ... I don't know.

However, the batteries will store twice as long if they are (dis)charged to around 40% and then stored someplace cold (like your fridge). I keep thinking 10 years ... but I'm too lazy to search for it right now.

I'm not sure exactly what reactive metal mesh is, but an atomizer is manufactured with some kind of oil in the mesh to lengthen it's shelf life. I'm not sure what it protects against ... corrosion, rust ... is that the same thing?

Long term storage, in preparation for the really bad times:
Has anyone thought of using Cosmoline? Have some protective devices still coated in cosmoline, lasts for 40 years. Vapor would taste like I don't know what though.
Best bet for atomizers might be to wash, completly dry, warm, then vacuum bag them in

Biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate.

This is the stuff "Pop Tarts" are packaged in and they last for 40 years also
(man I just love Pop Tarts). Mylar Film, vapor proof, heat sealable.

Batteries: Batteries can fail, study up and have the ability to adapt an atomizer (model of your own preference) to an emergency power source. Your own Flashlight Mod, power cord with alligator clips, solar cells. Even if you don't make something like this, know how to. FDA could cause a political catastrophe for us, but a few years back we were caught in Katrina, a natural catastrophe, and I ran out of smokes. You did not want to be around me, take my word for it. Thank you National Guard for the food and water.
Finally got some Cigars from a local shop, selling off his stash because his humidor lost power. Won't happen again, I'll be able to vape through just about anything. We joke about what is about to come but most of us live somewhere that something natural could cause us problems. Learn how to take care of yourself. Having the ability to provide vapor for the "compound" could make you just valuable enough to be kept alive.
The Rocket,

Carburator and choke cleaner (the kind that dries fast) will dissolve cosmoline like it's nothing if you ever need to do this. Do you think the seal-a-meal vaccume sealer things would work to seal e-cig and nic-things with?

Love it, choke cleaner, Auto parts store here I come.
seal-a-meal is pretty good. The silver mylar has a much higher sealing temperature than the poly. Aclar can also be heat sealed, probably easier than Mylar. I use a sealing iron from my R'C modeling days.
Aclar:
A high-density fluorocarbon film with excellent water vapor barrier properties; ideal for long-term storage of hygroscopic powders and similar materials. Provides Level I protection for aerospace and military applications, as well as the pharmaceutical, medical and electronics industries.

Rocketship stuff,
The Rocket

ROTFL!!! This post of yours made my night!!!

(It could be oh so true though in an uncertain future.)

(I still wonder what a 40 year old Pop Tart might taste like. I hope I don't dream about them tonight. Just the thought gives me the willys.)

Well,
I am not sure about 40 years on a Pop Tart. I did however get one from a vending machine that was past its expiration date. The thing tasted "powderey" like all the humidity was just sucked out of it. Yes, I ate it. Thats just how I roll. LOL
