I'm not sure how Tree is doing the initial fill. I use a syringe for the first fill and START at the bottom. Maybe that's why I haven't had a problem with them yet. Maybe I'll bring her a syringe for Christmas.

Working every day on "This Old House"

Sounds like you have the issue well in hand. I syringe 4.5 ml for first fill, and no matter how slow I go, some still comes out the bottom. Then add a little more, vape a while top it off, etc. Once they get going all is fine. Filling from the top only probably leaves a large air bubble down around the lower coil. Bad news.

Welcome Tree.

Rocket, is it better to syringe fill every time, or is filling that way initially then topping off nightly ok?

Once the carto has been filled the capillary action becomes easier..you can actually see it in the clear ones.. as well as the missed spots on initial fill...yesterday I was filling a DCC XL clear and after 30 mins and repeated drippings there was still a substantial section that hadn't gotten any juice to it all and it still dripped out the air hole...granted it was a 100% VG bobas bounty but it still shows what can happen...after that refilling was not a problem once all the filler gets wet...it travels much faster and more evenly once it has been entirely wetted.

Hi Tree!

Rocket and Berger both nailed it.
Since I've been using the clear mega DCs it's much easier to see the secret life of carto filler.

Ever since JJ posted the pic of his carto with a section that just wouldn't wet, I started drip filling instead of using a syringe to see for myself.
I'd say a good 15-20% of the time dripping won't saturate a carto's filler fully.
Any dry spot in the filler could be bad news.
It only takes a very small, dry burn to ruin the taste forever.

Syringes are cheap, and I use the 18 or 20 guage blunt needles for filling cartos.
(Sharps are much better, but the county I live in requires a prescription. Of course, you can always take a blunt and file or sand it down at an angle to make a sharp.)
Just slide it gently between the filler and the carto wall all the way down.
Push the plunger as you very slowly remove the syringe to fill a wide strip from top to bottom.
Repeating every quarter turn around the carto works for me.

Tree, PM me a mailing address and I'll send a few syringes and needles for you to try out.

Wow wiz, how nice of you! I'm gonna see Tree on Christmas. I've still got half a dozen sharps, so I'll take her one or two. Hmm. I better take at least four. The sisters are gonna want them too.

Is the juice youre using more than 50% VG? Ive had heavy VG juice 'pearl' on top of carto filler...

I used 100% VG in the honkers without a problem. Could be the ingredients in the juice. Due to the filler, would think if it mucks up a reg carto, it would a large honker one. I got 80PG/20VG that clogged the heck out of cartos.
