Dana,
Market is kind of flooded. I actually own an ecig business that's just making big ass sucking noises at the moment. I really only have myself to blame as I have a very limited selection compared to other vendors. Heard gripes about this from the very few customers I've been able to pick up. I had one slight advantage in that I was able to build the whole web site myself. Which probably saved me $5-7K. Also try to have some kind of budget for advertising and potentially packaging. Was about to try and start adding to my offerings when my day job stopped cutting paychecks... woo hoo.... love that. Also have organic flavorings in hand to start trying to make my own branded eJuice flavors.... but once again. I'm too broke at the moment to buy the remaining supplies I need to take accurate notes for making recipes.... let alone bottles to package it in.
I purchased all my product directly from Joyetech in China.... cost me close to ten grand in the end when they upped all their minimum quantities for making an order. I was always leery of buying from some of the distributors that allow you to buy in much smaller quantities as I just couldn't tell if it was knock off crap that would break and then be causing me headaches when customers called/emailed with warrantee issues I now had to deal with. All in all it's just like any other business. Oh.... one other thing you need to know about. The credit card processors still do not dig ecig vendors. I got dropped out of the blue once by one company, last summer. They dropped all ecig vendors... even though I've never had a charge back. I was offline for a month trying to get it resolved. You can find companies that will do it but expect to pay through the nose for this service. I had owned a couple other businesses prior to starting Vaprz and I was getting credit card rates under 2%.... now you're way lucky if you're under 4 and expect a reserve on top of that anywhere from 10-20%. They really stick you which ends up making it harder to make money.
I originally was starting this company for around $15K.... and was planning on spending just $7K for the initially inventory. The manufacturers had other plans. Knowing what I know now I'd say anyone trying to get started should probably have more like $25K-100K to start out.... and have some kind of marketing plan before you do. It's no different than any other business as I was saying.
Good luck and there's a little inside info for ya.
