| Okay, with a lot of help from Rocket and his Cheap all day sucker thread, I built my first 18650 battery mod. (dubbed the Blue Bolt due to it's shape)
First I picked up a flashlight, that was slightly longer than the $3 TP model, it ran $5 (I may be over budget already, doh!) However it does have a slightly longer strap, so I guess that helps defray the cost a little. The silver one is for length reference, my main concern was making the battery fit without having to mess with the button assembly.
I took it apart, then drilled a quarter in the center, which is not as easy as it may sound if you don't have a drill press, I have a vice, and that helps. After grinding the bottom of the adapter until it was flush with the ring that holds the center contact, I pressed the adapter (a 901 to 510 adapter) into the quarter. 12 ton press, so you have to be careful not to press too fast, or very hard. I then used epoxy (jb weld) to coat and insulate from accidental contact.
I also switched center contacts, I didn't like the one that came with the 901/510 adapter because of the hole in the very center, so I used the center from a sealed contact I picked up from mad vapes. It fits perfectly and will not leak into the battery compartment.
Inside the main body I used some leftover white tub seal I had, it is some flexible plastic that comes in a roll, I just cut it to fit so the battery would stay center. It has an adhesive backing that can be used to keep it in place.
For now I have a piece of foam inside the top cap to also help keep the battery center. (packing foam-half round white item in photo below) The tub seal was too thin for the top cap.
I put it all together, and it did not work, then I figured out it the inside lip of the top cap was painted and not making good contact, so I had to sand and rough up the inside where the quarter makes contact. After that, it vaped like a champ.
Considering the hardest part was drilling the quarter in the center, and sanding inside the top cup, it went together pretty easy.
Thanks again for all the help Rocketman!

| All right, great job. I guess if you want "Bling" the extra $2 is worth it
Looks like you got the insulation job done right.
Only thing I would consider is to drill some very small vent holes in the switch housing (from the inside).
Even though you will be only using PROTECTED 18650 CELLS vent the switch end.
Any small gassing will vent through these and pop the soft rubber cap off. Any larger venting will just blow the switch out the butt end.
and again, great job.

Rocket | 2x 1/8" holes drilled in bottom cap, I can see daylight, so I think that should be a decent vent. Yeah, I use protected batteries, but I prefer to be safe with anything near my body.
I am using a 2400 mah 18650, but I have 4x 3000 coming in the next week or so. Most of these are less than the rating anyway. I will say, even with a 2400 it hits much better when compaired to my 905 (900 mah bat) and even my 1000 mah ego (and cost me less than either one).
So, off to the store to buy a few more of these flashlights. |

I already have another quarter/adapter assembly ready to go. This is a 3 piece flashlight, which really helps when you are working the finer details. |

| That's why I like the flashlight. When a battery goes, and there's always a chance, know which end is going to give way first. The whole switch will blow out of the end of the flashlight. The little vents on pipe bomb mods with screw on caps on both ends will drop the pressure from 25000 psi to 24500 psi (just for illustration, the mod will blow before pressure ever gets that high). The gas is flammable. Little vents won't release enough gas once the flammable gas ignites. Videos of laptop batteries show the amount of gas that is produced. It burns it's way through all the plastic in the laptop.
And don't worry about the "Rocket" effect, just the "Bomb" effect.
Little vents just make a "leaky bomb".

Rocky | Kinda like high explosives vs ignitable where the C4 in the pipe bomb still blows up the pipe even though there are no ends on the pipe?

The thin shell on a Li-ion cells usually stands up to cell failure. The little vent at the positive end can't keep up and the whole front cap comes off the cell. The guts comes spilling out but the shell survives. More like a shotgun cartridge.
And the "Rocket Effect" some warn about isn't much of a reality. Action vs reaction would send a mod cap at a higher velocity than the whole mod. The cell inside a mod doesn't see any acceleration force until the mod blows. Pressure will produce force in both directions.
The real issue is how high the pressure gets before there is a mechanical failure.
And just where that failure is located. Even the example where unprotected cells blew a flashlight in someone's pocket and burnt their leg is better than the front cap blowing off. The butt end came off and hot flaming battery guts came out the butt end. Don't want any mod to blow. Just know which end is going to give way first if it does.

| Chris,
if you analyze the narrative of this event as described by a somewhat shocked individual you will see: Initial venting:
"looked down and saw a gray haze spewing out around the rubber tailcap button" Ignition:
"followed by a shockingly loud *BANG*" Sympathetic explosion of second cell:
"seconds later there was a second explosion" Consumption of remaining fuel:
"a small jet of flame six inches out of the tailcap".
Note that venting didn't prevent it from blowing;
that the jet of flame didn't propel the flashlight across the room;
that the tailcap blew and the front glass lens blew with the second explosion, but the case stayed intact.
In this case injury was primarily from the glass.
and that the cells remained in place.
Whatever the case, it blew.
Rocky

| If I ever have a mod blow, I just hope it fails mechanically just like Rob's. Butt end first.
Stacked batteries, single battery, could happen. Just know which end is gonna go first.
