All the articles I have seen on e cigs say they contain nicotine, and completely miss the fact you can get the carts without nicotine as well, and also miss the fact that a former ciggy smoker can start with a nicotine level as high as tobacco and work down to no nicotine, which is my plan...

Not entirely. Nicotine produces carcinogens merely by being heated, according to an FDA study. The heating process produces other chemicals from the nicotine. According to the study I saw, all e cigs/cartridges that contain nicotine will produce these by-products that are apparently cancerous. However, it seems that the e cig aviods a LOT of other chemicals produced by burning tobacco and the additives the tobacco companies add to the tobacco to enhance flavor and nicotine content.

There is also another caveat, and that is the production of methylene glycol as a by-product of heating Propylene Glycol. I cancelled and order I had for a gallon of PG and have been ordering only Vegetable Glycerin based e liquids, since these did not produce any other by products other than the ones produced by the heating of nicotine.
Certain non-nicotine cartridges from Smoking Everywhere also produced nicotine by-products, but I think that was only in the tobacco flavored products.
