I had an 801 battery go bad on me. SO,, of course i took it apart.
For those of you wondering asI what was inside, WITH the possibility of modifying.. here is what you have to work with.
picture 1 is what when you inhale, the vacuum pressure "pulls the bar up and it bridges contacts on the single black piece in pic #2. in that picture yoiu also see the battery and on it is the micro circuity that is its brain... small....
in picture 3, is what i finally figured out was the tire valve stem that fits a 901 atomizer, perfectly! It is a toy ball/football type inflator...and in #4 is the "adapter" on a 901 atomizer.
i am working on my own power source/all day sucker unit for both 801 and 901... and as i look at what some of you are making??? the ideas just flow! ouch my brain hurts...
hope this helps someone.. i was curious and now i now...
have fun!
John

Someone provided me with resistance values for atomizers, and they seem to run in the
3 ohm region. Any decent battery will do, and he told me that for a 510 atomizer ~5V is optimal; big vapor without burning it out.

I am working on a 12V mod that can use a wall wart or your ciggy lighter socket in your car. Since I won't be using the lighter anymore...

Here's something interesting about batteries.

How to prolong lithium-based batteries

How did you get it out all in one piece? I've destroyed a couple trying to do this.

ALTSmoke has a good solution for this problem!!

AltSmoke | Personal Vaporizer 510 Battery Thread - Battery Threads - Mod Shop

See the new thread I started, and also the Pro-510 thread.
I had forgotten about that one. Now, some more good news. There are some 9v LiPo batteries hitting the market, with capacities up to 700mAH ratings. Ever hear of a Zener?

if you go to wal-mart and buy a writing pen called Pentel R.S.V.P the threads that hold the back cap on are exactly the same as a DSE801 atomizer. I built a wall wart smokey in about 2 minutes using one of these. you can put one of the wires on the threads and the other wire you can slide in and out of the pen to make contact with the center. I used a 9v 500ma wall wart and it generates huge vapor I think the 500ma is maybe low enough to prevent burn out as long as I do not hole the wire on too long.

NINE VOLTS!!! How many times has the fire department been to your house!!!
I tried using an 801 atomizer on a 4v 2A mod I made and they burned up in record time!
However, you have piqued my interest. What time does Staples open...?

Never mind. I just looked it up, and I have one right in front of me!

Can you say "meltdown"!

so Im on day three of this writing pen 9v 500ma smoking and the atty is going strong I actually anticipated it to burn out quicky but it has not.
I have put my noodle on this though and have come up with an interesting second device now. they have these little voltage regulators at radio shack they sell in the grey drawers in the back of the store. it looks like your standard mosfet transistor but it is really a 5v 1 amp voltage regulator. you can supply up to like 30 volts and will get a steady 5v out of it Im now working on a 9volt powered box with one of these lil regulators to prevent too much voltage and a snazzy Pentel R.S.V.P to supply the threads. I will throw some pics on here of the process once complete.

Tried one. It didn't supply enough current to keep the atty lit long enough from a 12V source.

These work well:
Plug-in Power Modules - Non-Isolated POL - PTH08080W - TI.com

You can get up to 5 samples from TI. I have burned up a few attys with them, however. I use a resistor to set the voltage to 4.2 and the current at that voltage is internally limited to about 2A. That's 8.4 watts.

I have a similar module in a 1.5A version but I have to order the resistors on line and waiting till I need some more stuff so shipping doesn't make the cost ~$1.50 per resistor...

I also want to try one of the referenced power modules at ~3.8V. At 4.2 it smokes like a champ, but atty life is a matter of a few days and you lose the taste of the juice. If you're looking for lots of vapor, however...

I use 510 attys and D-1 cartomizers for my terminal experiments. I had 3 801's, but they dies in about an hour!

Im thinking maybe a pulse width circuit. that will provide good current but only in pulses so maybe to not destroy the atty. I built one like 10 years ago was not to hard I used a 555 timer. of course back then I had a soldering iron in my hands daily.

The listed device is a pulse width regulator, and it still burns up attys!
You made it 3.4 days longer with the 801 than I did!
