Using this gets rid of the yucky wadding! It wicks a lot better than the stuff that comes with the carts and there is no horrible burnt plastic taste when it gets a bit dry.

This is standard solder wick used to soak up excess solder from a joint.

Cut off 5cm

Tease it out to around 5mm width

Fold it in a zigzag

Use a small screwdriver to push it in the cartridge

Make a small gap at the side for air to surface while filling.

This one took 12 drops of liquid.

Great idea Ralph! I tried brass pipe screens and they work really well too but were VERY tedious to "tune". It looks like solder wick will be a lot easier to work with.

Note: Some solder wick is impregnated with flux. Even if your is not you should clean it well. I'd use alcohol or acetone followed with a water rinse.

I'll give it a try tomorrow at work.

Good job Ralph!

This sounds awesome. Only worry I have is if a piece breaks off (as is common w/ stranded copper) and gets down in the atomizer it may cause a direct short. And that would be bad.

I saw the stranded copper photographs and the first thing I thought of was, "I wonder if Zippo wicks would work..."

Heck with the copper and ni-chrome and high temperature you have a thermocouple. You have a itty bitty reactor in there. Wonder what compounds are formed from the liquid and various metals at temperature and with electricity applied.

If the copper stays nice and shiny then the reaction just might be "self cleaning" dissolving any strange compounds of copper.
I wonder if you can use an atomizer to extract and purify various expensive elements from brass? Sounds interesting, very interesting.

Cleaning it does seem best. I boiled some in glycerine.
I wouldn't worry about copper getting into the atty coil. Its quite well covered in nickel foam. The copper is still shiny after a day.

Ok, I'm lost on why everyone wants to change the filler. If I understand correctly I can use Fluva? From the fish department or poly fill from the craft area.
And I seen something about using tea bags.

Can I ask why? Is there a reason to want to change the filler from what it is to something else? The only thing I can think of is for the cart to hold more juice.
If that is the case.. wouldn't copper eventually leave behind amounts of copper and it is injested?

Confused again.. research here I come..lol

Alle - I found with the supplied wadding I would get a burnt taste when it runs a bit dry. Also it didn't wick very well. With the metal wadding I get a much higher capacity and much better wicking. With the 510 it also seems to cool the atomizer a little.
I don't know of a copper compound that will vaporize at the temperature an ecig runs at so I don't see a danger. The atomizer itself seems to already contain copper, aluminium, nickel, chromium, zinc and possibly other metals.

And don't forget Tulle from the wedding isle at the craft store! That is my winner, hands-down, for wicking. Tedious to work with but it wicks like a champ.

Works GREAT!

It took me a while to get it tuned in and fit my bridge perfectly but once I did it worked well.
