So, I just got my first three-piece ecig today - a DSE-801 HP/HV.
I read that there might be a burnt taste at first, but this is much worse than I expected, and it doesn't seem to be going away.

I did read about a 'burnt metal vs burnt mop bucket' taste several places but I wouldn't know what a burnt atomizer tastes like, so I can't compare.

I CAN say that I dropped two drops of liquid on the atty before vaping, just to make sure it isn't dry. I can also say that though I have been enjoying a particular juice greatly when refilling the cartomizers on my two-piece set, I cannot taste ANYTHING but nasty, harsh, chemically burn with the new set. I can add that it is this way with both atomizers that came with the starter kit, not just one of them.

So -how do I know if I'm just burning off the priming solution, or if they sent me bad atomizers?
How long should it take to burn off priming solution (or tractor oil, or whatever it is)?
Is it normal that I'm not tasting the flavor from my liquid at all?

Help greatly appreciated.

Have you tried to dry burn them?
Without inhaling of course.

I would try the dry burn method 3-5 seconds, 3-4 times, then add 3 drops of juice, and see what happens.

Feel free to chime in here bikes.

Get some spare atomisers orderedthey are consumables. you will learn to have spares but you can stil save money over smoking.
In the mean time, you can try washing the atties under the hottest water you can find, soaking in diet coca cola overnight helps follow coke by hot water wash. After rinse, shake like an old school thermometer and blow water out from mouth and battery end get it reasonably water free try vaping again, just drip 3-4 drops directly on the atty.
vape it that way til you use up the juice (about 1 cigarettes worth.) Do not inhale while doing the taste test. Still bad try try again. Most atties have a breakin period usually a pack of smokes worth. Hang in there some atties have process coatings but almost all will go away with a little use. Don't let your atty get dry and 801s will not vape all of the juice in the cartridge which is why they have fallen into disfavor. Good luck.

I haven't had a lot of experience with the 801. The first two atties I had burned up in three hours each...(you'll hear me say that a LOT if you stick around here...).

I got two more, and it has a HARSH taste! REALLY harsh! I find that removing the cartridge, dripping a couple drops right on to the mesh, vaping until it tastes harsh again, dripping a few more drops even the harshness out a lot. Just drip a drop or two and puff until that burning taste comes back and repeat.

The vapor from an 801 is immense! With a heater and mesh that size it should be. But a lot of people when I started vaping (Oct 2009) were complaining the quality of the 801 was just too hit or miss, so I dismissed them. It is an awesome vape when it works and tastes right.

Um, sorry Kevin. I would NOT do a dry burn with an 801; I imagine it will only make the taste even worse. I may be wrong...you have had more of them than I...

I just started vaping about 3 weeks ago but when i get new attys the first thing i do is get a napkin and blow out the atty with the thread end in my mouth then set in on the napkin upside down where you drip into the atty and you will see all that lube come out on the napkin i have had to blow it out 5-10 times before i didn't see the napkin get wet,
then i drip 2-3 drops and do what Steampunk suggests above, hope this helps :-)

Yep, I blow threw new ones also, few more drops of juice, blow through them again. Do a few hits while blowing through the atty instead of sucking into your mouth.

To follow up, I soaked both atomizers in Jameson (whiskey) for about an hour. The taste is slightly better, but not much. Direct dripping 3-4 drops on the atty results in about two vapes that have the terrible flavor mostly cloaked, and following that it's back pretty strongly.

I seem to have slightly better luck using the cartridges than direct dripping - though this sucks a little, since I bought the 801 so I could direct drip instead of using carts.

For the moment, I've gone back to my KR808D-1 since it at least works and doesn't taste bad.

Would love to hear from someone who bought the 801 HP/HV though. My boyfriend bought the same model and is having the same problem with it*- so it's making me wonder if it's just the model.

Hmmm...dripping not working? I have a regular 801 atty and just drip right onto the mesh, and it makes that bad, nasty burning taste go away, and the cloud knocks me on my duff...Only get the burning tastes when the mesh doesn't pick up from the cart.
