| If anyone lives near an Advance Auto Parts, they have started to clear out a Victor QuikAir 12 volt tire inflator. This is much better than the little $10 and $20 units, but maybe not a good deal at the regular $60 price.
But at half price, that's a deal, if you get one that works. LED light, a real quick disconnect and about 10 times the output volume than the cheap $10 units. This is a direct drive unit, vs gear reduction in the little compressors.
Seems there are a pile of these that have a manufacturing problem and rather than recall them, it looks like they are being marketed off at half price, hoping some of them work. I got one for my car, the wife's car, the daughter, etc. and they work just fine after you 'modify' them.
The problem is with the short piston, the connecting rod journal on the pump crankshaft is not peened or staked adequate to keep the rod and piston stable and the bearing (a sealed ball bearing) from coming off the journal. When this happens, parts can break or the pump just stops working. You can read online reviews at the AA site. Most negatives sound like housewives. One dude even shows a picture of "the crank broke right at the piston". Huh, it's not made like that, and the picture doesn't show it.
End cover comes off with 4 phillips screws, and a couple of taps with a punch and it's fixed. I would do this even if you got one that worked.
How's that for off topic?
