Five volts will burn out attys a lot faster. You can get a TIP voltage regulator at Radio Shack for a few bucks, or a TI Plug In Power Module that you can adjust the voltage with by a resistor (fixed voltage. I have mine at 4.2V). I still burn out attys quicker at 4.2V.

I find that using a big battery like an 18650 works just fine. It will hold up at >4V for a couple DAYS and that's plenty to produce a cloud of vapor. It will fit inside one of the Dollar store flashlights. I had one maintain >3.8V for four DAYS. Much easier and MUCH safer than ganging batteries together.
BTW, ALWAYS USE PROTECTED BATTERIES and read the information on the web sites before messing with these things. They can burn and explode!
