Upon receiving your first e-cigarette, you will most likely need to charge your batteries. The first charge on most models should be done for 12 hours. After the initial charge, you should re-charge each battery for 4 hours minimum.

Many times, the light on the charger will turn green after only 20 minutes, even though it is not charged fully. Ignore the charger indicator, and keep track of how long you have charged your batteries yourself. 4 hours minimum will yield the best results.

If you plan on e-smoking regularly, a good idea is to get multiple batteries and multiple chargers for each model, so you can charge multiple at one time, and have plenty ready to go.

Great Info there!

A way to keep track of the time you leave your batteries on charge is a simple on/off timer. You can set it for your required time charging.

Less then $5 and you just set it & forget it!

(No more cooked batteries because you forgot and left it on for days.)

If you get manual 24hr ON/OFF (cheapest) make sure you check it before the next ON interval.)

Hope someone finds this useful!

Question: who has the cheapest little USB charger (the one with the cord), U.S. or not, for the 510? I have about 3 and they seem to be compatible with the 901 and the 510.
I want to glue about 5 together, cut the connectors off and wire them to a 5 volt, 1 amp digital (not the transformer type) wall wort. (and I like the timer idea) Looking for the cheapest price including shipping. Should be about $30 or so for the 5 of them. Thanks, Rocket

Don't know much about charging, but, isn't a basic charging schema: AH rating of battery / amp output of charger = charge time?

Eg: battery: 180mah (.180 amp-hour), charger output: 150ma (.150 amp) ~ .180/.150= 1.2 hour charge time?

I know this is a simplification. I believe I've heard that lithium batteries charge on a sliding voltage/amperage scale.

And, from playing with RC stuff that used NiMh batteries, I'm aware of peak detection charging - the charger watches for a small, momentary dip in the charge state of the battery, and switches off or to a trickle charge.

Does anyone know, are our battery chargers circuitry timed? When they switch from a red LED to a green LED, is this going into a "trickle" charge state?

Also, I've noticed that my wall chargers change from a continous red LED to a continous green LED, yet my USB charger will begin alternating between red and green after a while, with the duration of the red getting shorter until it is virtually green all the time.

render, noticed the same thing.
Not sure how each charger style works with respect to trickle charging. LI-ion, Li-po batteries have a much much lower leakage rate than either NiCad or NiMH. Thermal is their biggest problem. If the charger is really "trickle charging" that is bad. Lithium batteries will eventually reach peak and then go thermal if continually charged. The chargers that came with my e-cigars (for the 10430, 10440 AAA battery) would continue to trickly charge and the batteries would go gassy, and so far 2 have gone thermal.
That's when they get hot enough to boil water. I forget sometimes, have 2 that got dangerously hot, about 3 that won't hold a charge any more.
If the light goes out, (USB type) I think (but have not measured) that is safe. If the light stays on (the AC type) I would leave batteries on for a max time of maybe 3-4 hours. The green light seems to come on a little early on mine, I don't think they are done yet. Has anyone noticed that the rounded AC chargers seem to top off the battery a little better than the rectangular ones? At any rate, watch for a Li-ion battery getting warm, or showing since of spitting up (leakage) at the seal end (+).

Cheapest I found were in China for about $4 each,, (runyandirect, trueman, etc.), but couple a $20 shipping charge and you would be over budget for the 5 you want.

Ohh.... and yes, most a 901 USB chargers would work on a 510.

Hope this helps!

Yes, I agree. They're my favorite.

Stehle,
agree on the shipping. I get a little discount at one of the overseas sites.
These little USB chargers ought to be about 4 or 5 dollars. I hoping to get an offer that beats the target price. Charging is an absolute mess at our house. Camera batteries, cellphones, her digital cig batteries, mine, the two PCCs, laptops. If I make this little multi-chargers I'll post info in the DIY section. Rocket

Rocket-

The best price I've had stateside was at electronicstix.com for 7.95 ea. He's got them back to 9.95 now, but an inquiry couldn't hurt. He (Jason) charges a flat 6.00 shipping. I've ordered from him several times; quick shipping, good guy.

Did you see the mess I had to take on vacation? Posted my charging unit in the DIY section, Cheap all day sucker. Well, it's sort of looking like that around the house again.
Need to do something. 6 to 10 of these little USB chargers glue up nice and tight, one cord, etc. would really help. R

Made an error : I'm looking for the one piece USB charger, the push in type not the screw in type. The ones I have will charge 901s and 510s. Glued together in a bank or 5 or 6, and wired together, would be convenient and space saving. WAY to much current for USB that way.
Have checked all my Foreign sources and everybody is out of stock at the moment.

I think it is getting close to full charge. It may stop charging, test, charge a little more. I have a couple that go green and then shut off, then two that do like yours. THey seem to put the best charge on the battery. Even betterthan the hockey puck.
I have the means to record the charge profile, did it with Li-ion batteries a while back but not with the e-cig batteries.

I got a 1-yr birthday celebration notice from TW and in it, there was a 5-batt 510 charger advertised to be in stock soon along with 510 mega batts. Also, on October 5, they'll have 30% off sale for all online store products to celebrate their 1st anniversary (contest giveaways for their forum members, too, so I joined that). Check it out, Rocket; I didn't see a price for the charger but may be cheaper than DIY (I know, the DIY is more fun.)

Thanks for the heads up, DIY is fun, but so is spending money
I will check out TW.

Here's my clumpy DIY Triple charger for 510, Mega 510, or 901.

That is totally cool and to think you could do that with those 8 twisted little green fingers makes it doubly impressive....

did it with NO HANDS.

I'm not really happy with the style charger I used.
The center contact is fixed, the outer contact is spring loaded.
Bump it and the spring causes the battery to lose contact with the center conductor and stop charging. Don't bump it, and it's fine. Works with almost any e-cig battery, and was $4 ea.

I read something about this when I was delving into batteries and Li Ion and chargers, and...

In a protected battery, the protection circuit keeps the battery from over charging. The charger also has a protection circuit to keep the battery from over charging. If you had an unprotected battery, it would probably not flicker. I think what you're seeing is the battery saying, "I'm charged!" and the charger says, "no you aren't...yes you are...no you aren't..." I think they fight it out until the charger eventually says, "OK, I'll believe you now..."

A lot of people here like them, but they are a Chinese supplier. Check the freight charges! They charge something like $15 for the first kilo or so, so it's best to get a few things from them at once. And wait...and wait...and...

That's why I buy US shipped stuff. A little more, but THEY take the risks (sometimes the Feds seize e cig stuff, or so people here have said...) and I get it in 2-3 days.

The charger for the Li Ion batter in my camera does the same.
The battery and the charger just seem to like to argue for a minute before the charger has decided he's done.

yeah I don't think it would be worth it if it wasn't for the free shipping they have at the moment.
And as far as freight charges in general go, being all the way over here in Australia means they're going to be high wherever i go

Oh! Oz. OK, that's different!

Where? I've never been there, but always wanted to go. Problem is, I don't like snakes...bugs...spiders...nasty creepy-crawlies...and Dingoes...
